Skills For Growth in the UK Bioeconomy

The Skills Academy is currently developing a specialist biotechnology unit to meet the needs of industrial biotechnology and life science companies.

The bioeconomy is seen as being highly strategic to long-term economic growth, energy sufficiency, environmental sustainability and health and medication.

Biotechnology employers have identified a significant lack of provision. This pressing need for new provision demands a speed of response to meet the challenges the industries face.

The Skills Academy will achieve this through short courses and high levels of blended learning, incorporating e-learning. In addition to training products, the Skills Academy will broker access to specialists, since many training needs can be met by individual experts spending time with companies.

Building on current success, and reflecting the skills drivers and concerns of employers, a business model has been developed that incorporates the following elements:

  • Engaging with employers directly and through stakeholder organisations reflecting the wider support needs particularly of the SME community.
  • Identifying and developing providers within networks, enabling the development of their capability as Academy Centres and Centres of Excellence, able to meet the enhanced demands of employers.
  • Developing, through Cogent SSC, industry-led training standards which underpin the development of all Academy products and their delivery.
  • Sourcing and developing training courses, products and delivery materials validated against the standards and delivered by accredited providers.

An Overview of the UK Chemical Industry

The Chemical industry is one of the largest and most diverse manufacturing industries in the UK.

It is a vital trade supply chain to UK manufacturing from Aerospace to Pharmaceuticals, as well as retail manufacturing from Food & Drink to Personal Care.

The Chemical industry is comprised of commodity chemicals (e.g. industrial gases), speciality/fine chemicals (e.g. pharmaceutical intermediates, pesticides, explosives) and consumer products (detergents, fragrances, oils).  The UK Chemical sector directly  employs  over 140,000 people in high value jobs and indirectly supports around three times as many.

February 2012: Composites Skills Alliance joins partners to form Composites Hub

The Composites Skills Alliance has joined forces with Composites UK (the trade body for the sector) and the National Composites Centre, based in Bristol, to strengthen the composites industry in the UK.

The global composites industry is becoming increasingly competitive. According to market experts, the global industry for composites materials is estimated to grow by 4-6% in the next 5 years. The two sectors that will drive this growth are anticipated to be aerospace and wind energy.

Many competitor countries have recognised the strategic importance of composite materials and support their companies to develop capability to provide them with a global comparative advantage. Thus the UK is only likely to remain competitive by grasping commercial opportunities and building on the expertise and capability we already have to become a world class player. In order to do this we need a collaborative approach and improve joined-up activities. The UK Composites Strategy highlighted 4 key requirements:

• Leadership and coordination

• Value/supply chain development

• Technology development

• Skills development

The Composites Hub has been formed to bring together the key national delivery partners to achieve this.

November 2011: New Composites Awareness and Introduction courses

The Composites Skills Alliance has launched a series of Awareness and Introduction courses for people working in or with the composites industry. The Alliance, a partnership between the National Skills Academy Process Industries and Semta, the sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies, recently exhibited at the Composites Engineering Show in Birmingham where it launched the courses.

An employer group, with representation from aerospace, automotive, renewable energies and the composites supply chain, advised the Alliance on the courses required by industry and the design of the courses reflect their demands. They have been designed in a modular format to offer flexibility in how and where they are studied as well as to adapt to different career progression routes.

The courses are tailored for people across the organisations from business leaders to support teams.  They have been independently verified and accredited and include the following modules:

  • Composites - Issues & Opportunities
  • Composites - Individual Awareness
  • Composites - Business & Organisation
  • Introduction to Composites Manufacturing Processes
  • Introduction to Composites Materials & Properties
  • Practical Introduction  to 3 Common Composites Manufacturing Processes

Interest in the courses at the exhibition was high. Tom Preece, Composites Business Manager for the Academy said, 'The response we had illustrates the importance of these awareness courses. We work with a number of training providers who deliver specialist and technical courses but there is a real appetite among employers in the industry for employees to undertake general awareness courses.'

The courses will be rolling out in January and will be delivered in house or at convenient locations across the country. Please email info@composites-skills-alliance.com to register your interest

  • An Overview of the UK Petroleum Industry

The UK Petroleum industry (also referred to as the downstream sector) consists of refining and blending, storage, distribution and retail sale of petroleum products.

The industry is made up of over 200 companies (8,600 including retail forecourts).  The main product of the downstream sector is transport fuel (aviation kerosene, diesel and unleaded petrol) which can amount to 60% of refinery output.

There are eight major crude oil refineries operating in the UK, which supply the bulk (little under 90%) of national demand for petroleum products. Companies range from large multinationals, two supermarket chains and independent retailers.

An Overview of the UK Polymer Industry

The Polymer industry comprises four discrete processing areas: Polymer Processing (Plastics & Rubber Processing) Composites, Signmaking and Packaging.

The industry is important supply chain to heavy manufacturing industries such as automotive and aerospace. Polymer products are commonly used in many household products from cling-film to high tech composites. Polymers are versatile in that their shape, density, colour, translucency, conductivity, mechanical strength, corrosion resistance etc and can be finely tuned for a required application.

The industry directly employs over 220,000 people. This figure rises to approximately 400,000 employees when companies who process polymers as a secondary operation to their main business, are taken into consideration. Products and component parts developed using polymers, are used in many applications. Each year the demand steadily grows.

An Overview of the UK Pharmaceutical Industry

The UK Pharmaceuticals and Biotechnology industry is one of the most well established in the world and is a major export industry.

Covering the lifecycle of a pharmaceutical from discovery through development to manufacture and treatment, the sector and its supply chain encompasses modern bioscience and biotechnology.  From biologics to vaccines, and genomes to diagnostics, the sector operates at the frontiers of the sciences. It is intensely interdisciplinary, requiring specialists in science, bioscience, engineering and regulatory affairs to drive scientific and technological innovation.

Cogent estimates that pharmaceutical and associated biotechnology companies employ at least 73,000 people directly - 45,000 in established pharmaceuticals and 28,000 in associated biotechnologies. Induced employment is estimated at up to 250,000.
