Bill Mortel
Engineering & Technology Director, Trelleborg Industrial AVS - Audit
Director of British Rubber and Polyeurthane Products Association
Bill left school at 16 in 1970 to follow an Engineering apprenticeship with Leicester based Dunlop Polymer Engineering Division, making "Metalastik" rubber springs and Antivibration products.
39 years later he is with what is effectively the same company, now part of the Swedish Trelleborg Group and known as Industrial AVS.
Having extended his apprenticeship to include 3 years full time at college, Bill has developed particular skills in the Rail suspension and Military Marine application fields. He was a member of the working groups which developed new EN standards for Rail components and is a member of the BSI commitee which oversees these standards.
His specialism has resulted in travels to many customers and technical seminars across the world - also linked to his membership of the Rubber in Engineering Committee within the IOM3. This year he has become a Fellow of the Institute.
Bill strongly believes that this industry needs to have a structured programme which will enable his successor(s) to develop the required skills rather than developing a resource "desert".
